Hey all, I’ve recently started hearing this awful grinding noise whenever I accelerate, especially when I press down hard on the gas pedal. It doesn’t happen when I’m just cruising or idling, only when I really try to pick up speed. Naturally, my first thought was, “Oh no, is it the transmission?” but I’m really hoping it’s something less serious than that.
I’ve read a bit about possible causes, and it seems like it could be anything from worn-out gears in the transmission to an issue with the driveshaft or even the differential. Some folks have mentioned it could be the U-joints too. I’m really not sure what to look for or where to start troubleshooting. The noise is pretty unsettling, and I don’t want to ignore it and risk further damage.
Anyone else run into this with their Ranger? Was it an expensive fix, or something I can tackle myself? Any advice would be awesome because, right now, I’m just imagining my wallet getting lighter!
